Abstract
1,017,688. Welding by pressure. OMARK INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 11, 1964, No. 32700/64. Heading B3R. A welding stud holder comprises a number of gripping elements for holding a welding stud, a holder member having a cavity therein containing at least a portion of each of the gripping elements, a seal member in the cavity to form a fluid-tight chamber between the holder member and the gripping elements and means to supply fluid to and remove fluid from the chamber. A collet 10 is secured in a holder 16 by a screw 18 so that its resilient fingers 12 which extend beyond the outer end of the holder are surrounded by a resilient sleeve 32 which forms a chamber 28 with the inner wall of the holder. Air under pressure is supplied to the chamber by a fitting 40 to urge the fingers inwardly. A stop member 24 having a reduced diameter front portion 48 is provided in the collet to position studs 26 to be welded and the holder is secured to a shaft 22 of the welding apparatus. In a modification the stop member 24 is replaced by a tubular guide member and welding studs supplied by gravity through a feed tube are pushed down through the guide member into the collet fingers by a ramrod actuated, e.g., by an hydraulic cylinder. Liquids such as oil and gases other than air may be supplied to the chamber 28.
