[Class 39(iii)] An electrode holder for an electric furnace comprises a tubular arm 6 formed by an outer tube and an inner guide tube 13 extending longitudinally therein, an electrode clamp 10 at one end of the arm having an enveloping jaw with a passage 28 for cooling fluid and a co-operating movable shoe 19, pressed against the electrode by a rod 20 in the central guide tube 13, the outer tube being divided by a diametrical partition 14 into supply and return channels for the cooling fluid introduced through pipe 31. The conductive arm 6 is insulatedly mounted on a hydraulic ram 1 for vertical adjustment and abuts at 9 against a sealed portion of the annular clamp 10. Cooling water is fed from the arm 6 by pipes 17, 18 to the clamp 10 which has horizontal internal serrations 30. The shoe has vertical serrations on its electrode gripping face. The rod 20 is actuated by a lever 21 pivoted at one end 22 and connected by a rod 23 at the other end to a spring-pressed piston 25 in a cylinder 24, to which fluid pressure is introduced at 26 to move the piston against the springs 27 to release the electrode clamp.
