Abstract
520,319. Arc heating - electrodes. PAYNE, W.H. Jan. 10, 1939, No. 836. [Class 39 (iii)] A clamp for an arc electrode has a split collar 23, Fig. 6, surrounded by a rigid yoke-shaped strap 34 fixed to a supporting arm 40 mounted for vertical movement. The clamping is effected by a hydraulic plunger rod 45, Fig. 4, mounted in the arm 40, which co-operates with a stirrup 31 drawing together lugs 25, 26 on the ring 23. The piston 45 may, alternatively, be actuated manually by means of a screw pressure device 70. Vertical movement of the arm 40 is realised by a carriage 78 having rollers 84, 88 in a channel 86 of a vertical standard. The vertical standard has water cooling passages, whilst cooling water is also passed through channels 33 in the clamping ring 34.
