Abstract

The invention comprises a process for preparing compounds of formula <FORM:1015507/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 9 carbon atoms, an alkenyl, alkynyl, hydroxyalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl radical wherein the alkyl, alkenyl and alkynyl groups have up to 5 carbon atoms, or a benzyl or furfuryl radical, and therapeutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, by quaternization at the 3-position of 4,6 - diamino - 5 - formylaminopyrimidine by reaction with an R-halide, when R is other than hydroxyalkyl, or with an alkylene oxide, when R is to be hydroxyalkyl, treating the product with alkali when the quaternary compound is a halide and cyclizing the quaternary hydroxide in an alkaline medium at a temperature below 100 DEG C., and the products except for 3-methyladenine. 9 - (2 - Diethylaminoethyl) - adenine is obtained as a by-product from the above process. The compounds of the invention have analeptic, bronchodilator, vasodilator, coronarodilator, tranquillizing and a diuretic activity.
