Abstract

Purine compounds e.g. guanine, hypoxanthine, are formed by electrolytic reduction of 4-amino-5-arylazo-pyrimidine or a derivative thereof in the presence of formic acid which closes the imidazole ring (i.e. forming a purine ring), from the intermediate reduction product. The starting material is of the general formula <FORM:1076037/C6-C7/1> where X1, Y1 are H, lower alkyl, OH, NH2, alkyl-amino, alkyl-mercapto, or SH; R1, which may be up to three in number, are H, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy, halogen, nitro-, sulpho- and carboxy-radicals (only one of X1 and Y1 being OH at any one time). Lower alkyl groups may also appear attached to one or both of the N atoms of the nucleus. The reaction is effected at above 90 DEG C. using a solvent e.g. formamide. A range of metals is specified for use as electrodes, including mercury as cathode. Products specified include adenine and derivatives thereof, e.g. 2-methyl mercapto adenine.
