Abstract
An anodizing process for coating Zn and Zn-base alloy surfaces comprises the step of subjecting the surfaces to electrolysis, using alternating current, in an aqueous solution at a pH of 5-11.4 containing 0.3-3 moles/1. of phosphate anions calculated as PO4, a total of 0.1-3 moles/1. of chromate and/or molybdate and/or tungstate and/or vanadate anions calculated as CrO4, MoO4, WO4 and/or VO3, and Na and/or K cations. The solution may be at 25-100 DEG C. and may additionally contain F anion up to 1 mole/1. and also NH4 cation. The A.C. may be at 60 c.p.s. and the current density may be from 100-1000 Amps./ sq. foot of electrode surface until sparking is observed on an electrode surface and thereafter be reduced to 25-250 Amps./sq. foot, continuing electrolysis at constant current until the voltage has risen to a finishing value of 35-113 Volts. Specification 876,127 is referred to.
