Abstract

Phosphate coatings are formed on metal surfaces e.g. iron and steel, by applying a stabilized voltage to the surface as anode, using an electrolyte containing phosphate ions e.g. Na2HPO4 and H3PO4. The stabilized voltage is controlled by a potentiostat to produce phosphate coatings in the range up to 6000 mg/sq. ft. The coating may be modified by adding small amounts of heavy metal salts to the electrolyte or by changing the potential drop at the metal-solution interface.
