In apparatus for raising and lowering life boats B, Fig. 1, by means of winches 3a, 3b operating to lift blocks 7, 8 through falls 1, 2, slack is taken up in the falls by auxiliary winches 4a, 4b driven continuously through torque-limiting couplings. In raising the boats the fall ropes are drawn completely off the auxiliary winch drums so that the load is taken directly on the drum shafts. The auxiliary drums may be braked when the drive motor is deenergized.
