Abstract

A gas lighter comprises a gear-wheel 7 engaging a first pinion 6 on the shaft 4 of a flint wheel and a second pinion 6a on a shaft 4a carrying a pin 15 adapted to slide on a curved track 14a secured to a pivoted spring 13 holding the burner gas jet 12 in closed position. The gear-wheel 7 has internal teeth. Rotation of the gear-wheel 7 thus produces sparks from the flint wheel and moves the pivoted spring 13 to allow the burner gas jet 12 to be opened by a spring 22. The gearwheel 7 is mounted on an arcuate part of the cover-plate 1, rotates between stops and is returned by a spring. The two pinions 6, 6a may have a free wheel for the return movement. A flint and spring 10 are disposed in a flint tube 11 which is curved concentrically around the burner jet 12. It is stated that opening of the lighter cap or re-tensioning of the flint spring 10 could be effected by a third pinion. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the gearwheel has external teeth and is disposed between the two pinions; it is driven by a circular element surrounding the pinions. In another modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the gearwheel is rigidly secured to the gas tube feeding the burner jet and does not rotate and the pinion for the flint wheel moves in planet fashion around the gear-wheel. In a further embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the gearwheel or a segmental rack is rotatably mounted on the gas tube and is rotated by a lever which is either fastened to the gear-wheel or is coupled thereto by a curved rack.
