Abstract
616,279. Frictional igniters. SZERENYI, A. Dec. 15, 1945, No. 33992. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1944. [Class 75 (iii)] A lighter comprises a casing having a flint tube 13 and a wick tube 14 projecting from the top thereof, the said top having a recessed portion 36 to provide space for a rotatable actuator 28 for, the flint wheel 16 a pivoted cover 18 forming in its closed position a compartment to accommodate the actuator 28, and a slot formed in the cover 18 into which the actuator projects, the cover and the actuator being simultaneously engageable and operable by a digit of the hand holding the lighter whereby the cover is opened simultaneously with the operation of the actuator and is closed while said actuator remains stationary. The actuator 28, which may be mounted on a square part of the flint wheel shaft 17, may have four arms 27 adapted to pass through a slot in the cover 18, this cover being provided with an upward projection 23 forming an operating trigger 24. The cover 18 may be spring held by a coil spring 30 anchored at one end 31 to a notch 34 in a flame shield 19 and at the other end 32 behind the trigger 24, so that when the trigger is operated to open the lid the thumb will also rotate the actuator 28, but when the trigger is released the cover is closed by the spring 30, the actuator remaining still with the next arm 27 in position for a further operation. The actuator 28 may be provided with tapered arms 27 having friction surfaces, or the actuator may be a complete friction wheel, and two actuators may be used, one on each side of the wheel. The wind shield 19 may have bracket arms pivoted on the flint wheel shaft 17 and may have downwardly projecting lugs 21 brazed or soldered to the lighter. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a lighter in which the flint wheel actuator is not provided with radial arms, but it consists of a friction wheel of the same size as and mounted on the same shaft as the flint wheel, to which shaft the lighter cover is also secured, so that when the flint wheel is actuated the cover is raised. The top of the lighter casing is not recessed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
