In a window assembly comprising a fixed frame having upper and lower members 3, 4 with a sliding pivotable sash 27 or other panel, opaque if desired, having members slidable in upper and lower guides 12, comprising a shaft 17, with means to maintain its axis vertical and comprising at each end of the shaft respectively toothed wheels 20, 24 secured to the shaft and engaging respectively rack bars 21, 25 secured in the members 3, 4, and a link 10, pivotally connected at its ends to the frames 27 and 4 about axes which are parallel to that of the shaft 17, while the axis of the shaft and of the pivotal connections when the sash 27 is closed all lie in one plane parallel to the plane of the fixed frame 34. There may be two sashes pivoted at their outer edges 7 and one link may be omitted. Each sash is supported on rollers 19 running on a flange 12A and guided by one or preferably two spaced rollers 18A engaging in a slot formed in the flanges 12A. A slidable member 22 is provided at the top of the shaft 17 and contacts the underside of the flanges 12A of the upper guide.
