Class 20(3) [Also in Group XXV] A window assembly includes two window jambs supporting an upper and lower pane movable in grooves therein, each jamb consisting of an outer and inner channel with the ends of the flanges of the inner channel abutting against the inner face of the web of the outer channel to form grooves at each side and the flanges of each inner channel are formed into at least one pair of coaxial holes with a friction member protruding through each hole. Upper and lower panes 1, 2 slide in grooves between an outer channel 3 and inner channel 4, the inner channel 4 being provided with a series of co-axial holes 5 through which segments of spheres 6 protrude. A spring 7 between each pair of segments 6 presses them outwardly to engage the pane or panes and press it or them against the channel 3, each segment 6 having a flange 8 to prevent outward movement of the segment when not engaged by the pane. A fixed transom 9 lies between the two panes 1, 2 and supports a vertical rod 10 having radial arms 11, 12 to engage the panes 2, 1 in the closed position, a spring-pressed pin 13 then engaging a socket 14 in the transom 9. A sill 17 comprises a main part 17A and a higher narrow sill 17B to be engaged in the closed position of the pane 2 by a tongue 19 projecting from the edging bar 18 of the pane. A lifting rail 20 is provided integral with the edging bar 18. According to the Provisional Specification, friction members may be provided to press against opposite faces of the panes and one set may press more lightly so that the panes just engage the sides of the grooves.
