Abstract

[Also in Division B4] A stapling machine for sealing the mouth of filled bags comprises a number of stapling tools 6, each having an operating lever 12 and mounted on a head 5 so that their jaws 10, 11 are directed downwardly and aligned so as to be capable of receiving an upwardly-presented closed mouth of the bag, the mouth being secured by inserting a row of staples upon the actuation of a common lever 24 coupled by means 13, 14, 15 to the several operating levers. The separate stapling tools are mounted on a frame 7 adjustably secured to a column 22, the operating levers 12, each being connected to a rod 13 having a pair of rollers 14 mounted thereon. The actuating lever 24 is in the form of a foot pedal pivoted at 26 attached by an adjustable rod 30 to a pair of cams 15 slidable in guides 16; the cams are urged by a spring 33 to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1. In operation, a filled bag is placed on a platform 36, mounted on rollers 38, and moved under the stapling head S so that the closed mouth of the bag passes between the jaws of the stapling tools. Upon depressing the foot pedal, the cams move upwardly in their slides and abut against the rollers, thereby actuating the levers 12. The base 23 of the machine is mounted on castors 43 and provided with jacks 44 for stabilizing the machine when in position.
