Abstract

961,874. Making tubular containers. MEAD CORPORATION. Nov. 16, 1961, No. 41114/61. Heading B5D. Ends 45 are secured to tubular containers 5 by a press head 33 provided with sectors 36 encircled by a spring 42 and having cammed edges 40 (Fig. 4) which fold over the projecting upper end of the tube 5. The folded over tube may be secured to the end 45 by adhesive. The machine is hydraulically or pneumatically operated and controlled by pedals on cylinders 111, 113. A tube 5 is placed on a former 3 and a lower stop 6 is adjusted to provide an upper portion of tube extending above an end 45 which has been placed on a head 80 (Fig. 4) on the former. When the pedal on cylinder 111 is depressed, fluid causes members 21 to grip the tube and a piston and cylinder device 47, 48 to operate links 49, 57, whereby the press head is moved downwardly. A member 71 is tripped by link 57 and causes a second piston and cylinder device 103 to raise slightly a rod 92 which abuts and lifts the head 80 in opposition to the downwardly moving press head. On completion of the pressing operation, the pressing head, the head of the former, and the members 21 return to their inoperative positions. The pedal on cylinder 113 is next operated and an ejector pin in the head of the former raises the container for removal. The head 13 of the machine can be pivoted horizontally about an upright 9 to give access for loading and a spring-loaded pin 60 locates the head in its operative position.
