Abstract
1,009,935. Inoculation apparatus. C. HABER. Nov. 3, 1961 [Nov. 3, 1960], No. 39359/61. Heading A5R. Inoculation apparatus comprises a hand syringe connected by a pipe to a serum container having a plunger slidable therein under its own weight, the arrangement being such that actuation of a control device by an operator causes the descent of the plunger by a predetermined amount to inject a measured quantity of serum. A cylindrical glass container Z, held releasably by a spring clip in a part of a frame 27, is connected by a flexible pipe 7 to a serum container 1, and is also connected by a flexible pipe 5 to a hand-held casing 4 mounting a hypodermic needle 6. A plunger 8, slidable in cylinder 2, is connected by a hollow stem 19 to a cylindrical casing 18 surrounding cylinder 2. A pair of weights 12, 13 connected at their upper ends by a yoke 64, are slidable on a pair of rods 14, 15 which rise from frame 27 and are connected at their upper ends by a carrying handle 28. Tugs 22 on the weights 12, 13 engage between radial flanges 20, 21 on casing 18, whereby plunger 8 is biased downwardly. A conical valve 11, in the base of plunger 8, may be opened manually by a linkage 23, 24, 133, 136 against the bias of a spring 134. Pipe 7 is normally closed by a pivoted clamp 77 held in clamping position by a spring-biased plunger 78. Plunger 8 may be raised manually by a lever 9 actuation of which closes a switch 84 to energize a magnet adapted to move clamp 77 to release pipe 7 and to clamp pipe 5, whereby cylinder 2 can be charged with serum from container 1. A yoke 65, which normally rests freely on yoke 64, is formed with sleeves 66, 67 slidable on rods 14 and 15. Mounted in sleeves 66, 67 are solenoids 68, 69 which, when energized, serve to lock yoke 65 to the rods 14, 15. The base of needle 6 is detachably connected to a metal pipe 50 mounted in casing 4. Pipe 5 adjacent to its junction with pipe 50 is normally closed by a pivoted clamp 38 held in clamping position by a spring-biased plunger. Closure of a switch 45, mounted on casing 4, causes energization of a holding relay which in turn energizes switch relays to effect energization of a magnet adapted to release clamp 38 from pipe 5, and also energization of the magnets 68, 69. Yoke 65 is thereby held stationery, while plunger 8 descends to expel serum through needle 6. Separation of yokes 64 and 65 is arranged to produce therebetween an increasingly intense frequency field, which, on reaching a predetermined value, causes tripping of the holding relay. Clamp 38 is thereby re-applied to pipe 5 to stop the flow of serum and movement of plunger 8, while yoke 65 descends into contact with yoke 64. The strength of the field at which tripping of the relay occurs, and consequently the quantity of serum injected, is adjusted by means of a rotary knob 70 adapted to select one of a series of capacitors. An abutment 33, movable with plunger 8, is adapted, when the latter approaches the bottom of cylinder 2, to close a switch 34 adapted to trip the holding relay and to sound a buzzer. A magnetically-operated device, adapted to stir up the serum, is mounted in the base of cylinder 2.
