Abstract

1,009,706. Spray-producers. RANSBURY ELECTRO - COATING CORPORATION May 31, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 21008/62. Heading B2F. Spray charging apparatus receives coating material from a source of supply 35 and is formed of electrically insulating material comprising a disc 14 with an outwardly presented surface and a discharge edge 18b, the disc carrying within it an electro-conductive element 20 adapted for operative connection to a high voltage source 29, and the apparatus has means, including a nozzle 34, whereby coating material is supplied to the surface of the disc whence it is brought into contact with the element 20 and is discharged from the edge 18b as a charged spray. The disc carries a pair of insulating rings 15, 16 and the element 20 may be applied to the ring 15 as a coating comprising particles of finely divided carbon in a thermosetting resin binder, being thus sandwiched between the rings 15, 16. The disc 14 is rotatable through a shaft 39 from a motor, enclosed in a housing 57, and the disc 14 is joined, by insulating pins 32, to a rim 12 to which the ring 15 is cemented. The rim 12 has an annular trough 24 to receive coating material from the nozzle 34 and, on rotation, the material passes along a sloping wall 30 to the coating-delivery face of the ring 15. The outer rim of the ring 16 is shaped into an annular rib 18 which acts as a dam to feed coating material uniformly to the sharp edged periphery 18b under centrifugal force. At the edge of the ring 15 the coating material comes sufficiently close to the periphery of the element 20 to become charged by the high voltage thereon which is impressed by a brush connection 37. The material is thus discharged from the edge 18b as a spray of finely divided electrically charged particles. A rib 65 on the driving coupling 47 prevents the spraying disc from falling off when inverted. The conductive element 20 may be two concentric rings of electrically conductive coating material interconnected by radial wires. Specification 865,765 is referred to.
