Abstract

991,973. Spray-producers. SOC. ANON. DE MACHINES ELECTROSTATIQUES. June 19, 1962 [June 23, 1961], No. 23570/62. Heading B2F. A centrifugal sprayer device including a rotary member having a surface generally radial to the axis of rotation of the member and means for directing liquid to be sprayed upon said surface whereby the liquid will flow radially outward along the surface by centrifugal force and will be thrown out from a peripheral region thereof in spray form, includes means on said surface defining obstacles which are arranged so as to impede the free radial flow of the liquid in all radial directions around said axis, whereby to improve the uniformity of spray circumferentially of said member. Liquid is directed through a nozzle 4, Fig. 3, on to the curved surface of the hub 2 of a rotating disc 3 and is flung by centrifugal force across the face of the disc and outwards as spray from the periphery 8. Concentric grooves in the face of the disc present obstacles to the movement of the liquid and thus improve the uniformity of the spray. Instead of concentric grooves there may be a spiral 7, Fig. 4. The groove profile is saw-toothed, which formation may have a rounded face. The obstacles may be separate projections and/or recesses 14, Fig. 8a. With a spray head used in an electrostatic coating process, Fig. 7, paint is forced in the direction F to the outer surface of a conical hub 11 and centrifugal force causes it to pass through apertures 12 and creep outwards along the front surface 13, in which obstacles are formed. The paint is flung off as spray from a sharp edge 10 and is electrostatically charged by the application of high D.C. voltage to the outer body 9.
