Abstract

1,012,129. Electrostatic spray producers. HURSANT DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Nov. 13, 1961 [Aug. 11, 1960], No. 27825/60. Heading B2F. An electrostatic spraying apparatus comprises a rotatable electrically non-conducting cup, e.g. nylon, on a conductive shaft 5 and spider 4 driven by a pneumatic motor 23, and a nozzle 21 which directs coating material, supplied under pressure through an inlet 20 under the control of a needle valve 18, on to a disc which is fixed to the shaft 5. The material forms a film on the disc, travels toward the edge thereof due to the disc's rotation and leaves the disc to form a film on the interior surface of the cup which is tapered. The coating material is subsequently flung off a sharp edge 28 of the cup in atomized form. A high voltage source (100 kV) is connected, via a coaxial cable (not shown) and limiting resistors (not shown) in a tube 10, to a terminal 16 which is electrically connected through a ball race 12 to a conductive shaft 5 and thence through the spider (and the disc if it is conductive) to the film which assumes the potential of the spider. The atomized particles travel toward an article to be coated, which is at earth potential, under the influence of the electrostatic field which may also assist the atomization. The drive shaft portion 14 is electrically non-conductive.
