A latch assembly of the kind having a rotary toothed latching member 12 co-operating with a tooth 22 in the edge of a notch 23 in a striker plate 13 is distinguished by the feature that the striker plate is a single flat plate provided with means for securing its upper and lower ends to the door pillar or other frame member on which it is to be mounted, and with the toothed notch extending in from one edge of the plate intermediate its end. In the embodiment described the rotary gear 12 is mounted on a shaft 12<SP>1</SP> the outer end of which is supported by a bearing 18. The gear has two teeth 20, 21 which co-operate with the tooth 22 on the striker plate in the known manner. When the door is closed a yieldable cam 25 acts on the gear 12 to wedge the tooth 20 down into the pocket 24, the cam being journalled on a shaft projecting from the back of the striker. A disc 29 mounted on the shaft 12<SP>1</SP> is engaged by the cam 25 and also serves as an anti-burst device in the longitudinal direction. The door pillar 14 is formed with a recess 33 to receive the gear 12 and disc 29 when in the latched position. The striker 13 is elongated to span the recess 33 and it is preferably seated in a shallower recess 35 so that the striker lies flush with the door pillar. The striker is secured to the pillar 14 by two bolts 36 and third bolt 38 projecting through the shaft 27.
