Abstract

1,006,521. Transformers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Sept. 23, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 37313/63. Heading H1T. An inductive apparatus (e.g. a transformer), having at least one high voltage winding 12, has a lead 22 surrounded by a shield 42A which also, 42B, encircles .the H.V. winding, has solid insulation 140 substantially surrounding the winding and shielding member, and has a second shield 90 surrounding and contacting most of the solid insulation 140, with an intermediate shield 20 embedded in the solid insulation and substantially surrounding (20A) at least part of the lead and being interposed between two parts 12A and 12B of the H.V. winding. The shield 90, which may comprise a crepe-backed metal film (e.g. aluminium) or a carbon -film, may be earthed, and the shield 42A, which may be a similar film wrapped around a phenolic laminate tube 30, may be connected to the H.V. terminal 21 or may be used as the conductor instead of 22, and the intermediate shield 20 formed like the outer shield may be connected to an intermediate portion of the H.V. winding. The part 42B of the inner shield may be hollow and form a cooling duct with the tube 30, and may comprise press-board or laminated plastic rings 50, 54 (Fig. 3), corrugated press-board spacers 56, 58, 60, 62, rope or metal tube end rings 66, and a binding 70 of crepe backed metal foil or the like. A metal end ring 66 may conveniently form the sensing element of a capillary thermometer. Specification 620,900 is referred to.
