[Also in Division B6] A device for measuring the distance of the base of a type character from the edge of the type body C, Fig. 4, cast therewith, comprises a frame a with a base plate a<SP>2</SP> upon which the body C is placed with the character face abutting against a vertical face a<SP>7</SP> on the frame, and a dial micrometer B with a feeler foot B<SP>1</SP> having either a Knife edge or being wedge shaped for engaging the character base. In use, the dial B is first set to zero with the foot B<SP>1</SP> engaging the plate a<SP>2</SP> the foot B<SP>1</SP> is lifted by a lever D, the type is placed in position on the plate a<SP>2</SP> and then the foot B<SP>1</SP> is lowered to record the required measurement. The type body is formed with a transverse groove on the corresponding to the base of the character, and with a ridge on the opposite face. A recess a<SP>5</SP> is provided in the plate a<SP>2</SP> to receive the ridge, and also a further recess a<SP>6</SP> to clear burrs on the type body which might cause a faulty reading.
