Abstract

1,003,825. Crimping fibres. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Jan. 5, 1962 [Jan. 9,1961(2)], No. 525/62. Heading D1F. [Also in Division A2] A crimped tow, the continuous filaments of which have an average angle of crimp less than 100 degrees is opened e.g. pneumatically, under tension and a positive retarding means is applied to the moving tow to restrict its advancement and thus compress the crimps to an average angle of crimp not exceeding 100 degrees. The filaments may be of acrylics, cellulose acetate or regenerated cellulose, polyesters or polypropylene. The final crimped tow may be formed into a narrow rope from which tobacco smoke filters are produced. In the operation of the apparatus shown, a crimped tow e.g. up to 100,000 total denier, is passed through the centre of an annular converging jet of compressed air, supplied to inlets 24 and escaping from an annular passage 20 formed by the end 19 of a tube 11 and a tapered orifice in a plate 13. The jet strikes the slower moving tow at an acute angle and creates suction in the tube 11 which thereby inhales the tow. The filaments are separated by air penetrating the tow and expanding explosively towards the walls 21 of a tube 14: they are reunited by the convergence of the walls 21 and are guided into a throat 22 wherein they continue to be agitated. The air and filaments then pass into a discharge chamber 23 and, on emerging therefrom, the tow is retarded by adjustably inwardly directed curved portions of resilient tongues 27 to compress the crimps. Specifications 765,961, 765,962, 765,963, 909,940, 933,227 and 986,393 are referred to.
