An apparatus for manufacturing a composite mouthpiece rod, includes a device having n inlet passages for filter plugs or components and a single outlet passage so that n types of plugs or components can be fed into the inlets, one type to each inlet, to produce a single line of plugs or components from the outlet. As shown, three types of plugs are fed into three bores 2, 3, 4 in a block 1 and which bores merge into a single outlet passage in the form of a bore 5. Three nozzles 6, 7, 8 are positioned in a single plane through the block 1 to inject compressed air into, and in a direction normal to the axes of, the bores 2, 3, 4, and the plugs in each stream are staggered with respect to one another. Continuous blasts of compressed air from the nozzles 6, 7, 8 thus project a plug of each type in turn into the bore 5 to form therein a stream of plugs of the three types in sequence. The plugs are fed from three mutually geared hoppers (not shown) on to fluted drums and then by pushers to the bores 2, 3, 4 by arrangement similar to that shown in Fig. 2 of Specification 971,491 for feeding plugs to the discs (25). A worm (not shown), similar to that shown at (15) in Specification 971,491, is sited downstream of the block 1 and serves a similar purpose to that in said prior Specification.
