Abstract

1,002,526. Folding boxes. BOWATER RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. July 10, 1964 [Aug. 8, 1963], No. 31348/63. Heading B8P. A carton comprises a rectangular body having one end closed by two pairs of opposite closure flaps in which the flaps 20, 40 of the first pair extend compositely across the end of the carton and interlock with each other, the flaps 30, 50 of the second pair extend partly across the end of the carton body, each flap of the second pair engaging with one flap of the first pair and having a tab (35, 55 respectively) folded back and adhesively secured to the other flap of the first pair. To set up the carton from the blank shown in Fig. 1, adhesive is applied to areas 27, 47 and/or to the tabs 35, 55 and to a tab 8; the closure flaps 20 ... 50 are folded to lie against panels 1 . . . 4 with the areas of adhesive exposed; the blank is folded about lines 5, 7, thus securing the tab 8 to the panel 4 and the tabs 35, 55 to the areas 27, 47 respectively. As the flattened blank is opened out, the pairs of flaps 20, 40 and 30, 50 splay away from the side walls; tongues 23, 43 and noses 24, 44 of the flaps 20, 40 engage under free edges 42, 22 and tongues 43, 23 of the flaps 40, 20; the closure flaps 30, 50 move over the sides of the flaps 40, 20 as shown in Fig. 2. The top of the carton may be left open, or closed in any convenient manner.
