Abstract

1,000,481. Sewing machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Sept. 22, 1961 [Oct. 13, 1960], No. 35025/60. Heading D1G. A sewing machine shuttle comprises a rotary looptaker 1 journalled in a fired member 3, a locking-thread case 7 having a cylindrical recess 5 adapted to receive a cop of thread and journalled within a recess 4 in the looptaker on ball bearing 13, and a member 19 extending across recess 5 for retaining the cop therein and having a threadguiding passage 25 in axial alignment with the axis of recess 5. Member 19 is in the form of a bar one end of which is pivoted at 17 to the thread case and the other end of which is releasably secured to the thread case by a latch member 33 pivoted at 35 to bar 19 and having an end portion 37 biased by a spring 39 into a recess in the thread case. Bar 19 carries a pin 21 which extends across the open end of the thread case. The thread passes from the centre of the cop into the passage 25 which extends into the thread case, then passes between a tensioning leaf spring 27 and a wear block 29 on bar 19, and finally passes over a pin 31 on bar 19. The thread case is prevented from rotating solely by the tension in the locking thread. It is stated that the shuttle is incorporated in a machine for sewing outsoles to shoe welts such as that described in Specification 410,463.
