Abstract
A heat pump consists of a compressor which delivers a compressed gas to the condenser. The heat given out by the gas as it condenses is used for heating a building. The condenser gas passes through the expansion valve to the evaporator where it receives heat from surrounding water and the gas then returns to the compressor. To prevent a loss of performance when the evaporator becomes coated with ice, a by-pass line controlled by a valve allows hot gas to flow directly to the evaporator and melt the ice.
