Abstract
A heat pump consists of an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser and an expansion valve. Stale air is extracted, from the building being heated, by the fan and gives up its heat to the refrigerant flowing through the evaporator. Water flowing through the condenser is pumped through radiators to heat the building. A by-pass line with a valve can short-circuit the condenser if the pressure of the refrigerant is high enough to cause the temperature in the evaporator to fall below-2 deg.C and cause icing up of the evaporator surfce.
