Abstract

A heat pump consisting of a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve and an evaporator is used for central heating and also to supply hot water. The refrigerant in the evaporator receives heat from the ambient air which is drawn in through a duct by a fan. This heat, together with the heat contributed by the compressor heats the water flowing through the condenser which then flows through radiators. When required, additional heat can be provided by an electric or gas heater which is activated by a thermostat. A change-over valve enables domestic hot water tank to be heated instead of the radiators. A spring loaded valve enables both heating systems to be short circuited to assist starting up.
