Abstract

1523379 Central heating systems; solar heaters; hot water supply L L HORWITZ 17 Sept 1976 38727/76 Headings F4U and F4A A heating system comprises a thermally insulated reservoir 1 for water, the reservoir providing lower and upper intercommunicating chambers 2, 3. Water in the lower chamber is heated by being extracted from a lower portion of the chamber, passed through a heat exchanger 12 where it is heated by solar radiation, or wind power and then returned to an upper portion of the chamber. Water from the upper portion of the upper chamber is passed through room heating radiators and then returned to the lower portion of the upper chamber. The water is circulated through the two circuits by respective pumps 10,15 which may be thermostatically controlled. The chamber 3 contains a hot water supplier 18, provided with a heater 17, for heating cold water supplied through a pipe 19 and passed to an outlet pipe 20. The structure 5 between the two chambers may be provided with arrays of pipe stubs 7, 8 for allowing the passage of relatively warm water from the lower to the upper chamber and of relatively cold water from the upper to the lower chamber. Alternatively, the structure may be replaced by a bell-shaped structure, Fig. 2 (not shown) having a central opening for the upward passage of warm water and providing an annular opening adjacent the wall of the chamber for the downward passage of cool water. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, the structure 5 is replaced by a wall structure 31 in the form of a pressure vessel for preheating fresh water supplied through the pipe 19 to the hot water supplier 18. A heat pump system is also provided and comprises an evaporator 38 in the lower chamber, a condenser 40 in the upper chamber 3, and a compressor 39. The system may constitute an auxiliary heating system coupled to a heating system provided with a conventional boiler, Fig. 3 (not shown).
