Abstract

A house (1) has a battery of solar panels (2) on the roof. A water reservoir (7) in the basement or ground floor of the house contains a heat exchanger (5) and water is circulated through this and the solar battery by a pump (14) controlled by a thermostat (4) in the flow from the solar battery. The heat exchanger heats the mass of water in the reservoir which is circulated to conventional hot water radiators by a pump (13). The reservoir has auxiliary heaters which can be electric elements or smoke tubes from an oil or gas burner. A thermostat in the reservoir controls these heaters to maintain the water temperature when there is insufficient solar heat to do so.
