Abstract

1516981 Utilizing solar energy S R SMITH 13 May 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 8154/74 Heading F4U A solar energy collector panel 1 comprises a plate 5 mounted on a box-like support 4, a plurality of pipes 7 for containing heat transfer medium, e.g. water, contiguous with the rear face of the plate, and thermal insulation 8 between the pipes and the base 6 of the support 4. A layer of is provided between the pipes and the insulation to reflect heat back to the pipes. The pipes and plate may be bonded together, formed of copper and painted black. As shown, thermal and atmospheric barriers are provided in the form of glass sheets 10, 11 separated by an evacuated space. Air heated in the spaces between the plate and the insulation may be used to heat part of a building in which the panel is installed. A domestic water heating system, Fig. 5, comprises a solar collector panel 40 connected to a tank 43 into which water heated in the panel passes and which is connected to a cold water tank 44 and to a hot water tank 48 having a hot water feed pipe 51. In modifications, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), indirect systems, with and without a circulation pump, are provided, the pump being connected to a control system having thermistors at various parts of the system, Fig. 8 (not shown). The solar heaters may be used for the heating of a swimming pool and may be connected, when the pool is not in use, to the heating circuit of a building. The solar heaters may also be used for under-soil heating in a greenhouse by storing heated water during the day and pumping the water through pipes in the soil by night.
