Abstract

This invention relates to a solar panel and a solar heating system. Its aim is to provide such a panel and system which functions efficiently in overcast conditions and can even produce a useful output at nightime. The panel comprises a heat absorbing plate 14 (e.g. made from copper) covered by a transparent glass window 12, the heat being extracted from the plate by fluid refrigerant circulated through tubing 20 in thermal contact with the plate. The refrigerant is circulated through the tubing by compression refrigeration apparatus, the condenser (29), Fig. 4 (not shown), of which constitutes the primary element of a heat exchanger (30) connected in a hot water circuit. In addition to absorbing heat from solar energy impinging on the panel, the plate also absorbs heat from ambient air circulating through the panel via air openings 6 in the panel frame 1 and openings 18 in the plate 14. <IMAGE>
