Abstract

The solar energy absorber (1) heats water which is circulated by a pump (2) either directly to space heating radiators (3) and a domestic hot water (4) or to a thermal store (5). Thermostats (9, 10) on the absorber (1) and in the store (5) provide inputs to a controller (14). The output of the controller operates flow regulating valves (11, 12, 13) and supplementary electric heaters (7, 8) in the thermal store and in the water circuit. Flow is controlled to give direct heating, direct heating plus storage, heating from store only or defrosting to give optimum operation throughout the day. The flexibility of the system results in a high overall efficiency.
