Abstract

The axial flow turbo jet unit (14) is particularly intended for producing thrust in an aircraft (10), and has a rotor coupled to a drive shaft (22) via a switchable coupling. The geometry of the unit can be varied between a position with low throughput and a position with high throughput. Lift fans (25) are provided which permit air to be admitted whilst in the low throughput position and before connecting the coupling, and further means to set the unit for high throughput after activating the coupling. The variation of the geometry may be achieved by altering the rotor blade angle or the blade angle of the entry stator blades.
