Abstract

The cylinder head has blind tapped holes (7) drilled in from the face (10) which seats on the cylinder block. Bolts (8) run through holes in the cylinder block and screw into the tapped holes in the head. The hold the cylinder head to the block and also hold the bottom halves (9) of the main crank-shaft bearings. This simplifies the construction of the cylinder head and makes mass production easier. Heavy bosses and large holes in the top of the cylinder head are eliminated to make the cooling water passages (12) simpler and remove restrictions on the valve gear assembly (16).
