Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively and uniformly cool a cylinder liner by constituting the cylinder linear as a wet liner separate from a cylinder block wherein cooling medium is supplied to a top portion of the liner so as to allow the cooling medium to flow down along the liner. CONSTITUTION:During operation an engine, cooling medium 5 fed to a main gallery 28 through a pipe 11 along a passage as shown by an arrow mark A by operation of a pump 9 is then flowed in an arrow mark B direction into a passage 23 of each cylinder 29 from a communicating hole 30. It is then soaked into a capillary body 27 in the passage 23 owing to a capillary force of the capillary body 27 and a pressure of the cooling medium whereafter it is caused to flow down owing to a capillary force of narrow grooves 26 formed on the whole cooling face of a wet liner 20 and also to an action of gravity while it receives heat from the liner so that it is gasified thereby. The gasified steam of the cooling medium is introduced into a radiator 7 through a steam pipe 6 and then cooled by means of a fan 8 to be condensed into cooling medium in the state of liquid, which is recirculated similarly.
