Abstract
The piston of the two-cylinder in line engine move in the same direction at the same time. The engine uses a toothed belt (18) to drive the overhead cam shaft (5) and a jockey pulley (8) maintains the correct belt tension. The jockey pulley (8) which rotates in the opposite direction to the crankshaft is provided with a balance weight which counteracts half the piston inertia forces. The crankshaft carries a similar balance weight so that out-of-balance forces in the direction of the cylinder axes are completely balanced, whilst each balance weight cancels out the lateral force generated by the other balance weight.
