Abstract

The hearth is constructed from prefabricated blocks, each of which has two sides and a back and which are placed one above the other to form a complete fireplace. A grate is inserted between two successive blocks at an appropriate height to leave a suitable ash pit under it. The sides of the blocks contain passages through which air circulates to be heated by conduction from the fire and be discharged to provide convective heating of the room. At low level there are separate inlets for room air and fresh air which mix within the passages and are discharged through a common outlet at high level in the fireplace. This gives a self regulating balance between fresh and room air.
