Abstract

The boiler has a hopper from which fuel descends at a controlled rate by gravity onto an inclined grate. The grate bars are water cooled. The sides and top of the combustion chamber are water jacketed and there is a convective heat exchange section after the combustion chamber. Primary air is introduced by a fan through a channel underneath the grate. Secondary air is introduced by a separate fan through a pipe above the grate. The primary air flow is controlled by a damper in the channel which is electro-mechanically controlled to increase the air flow as combustion progresses.
