Abstract

The silencer has a cylindrical shell (1) with end covers (2) and (5) and intermediate plates (3) and (4). The inlet pipe (10) passes through a hole in the end cover (2) and abuts against the intermediate plate (3) which forms an end wall. The exhaust gases entering the pipe (10) pass through the holes (11) in the pipe wall and then through the holes (15) in the intermediate plate (3). The gases then pass into the chamber (7) and then into the flared mouth (12) of the pipe (13) and out to the atmosphere. The pipe (13) has a number of small holes (14) in its wall and is surrounded by the sound absorbing material (9) which fills the chamber (8).
