Abstract
The beam consists of a metal web (1) counter-sunk edgewise into a piece of wood (2) perpendicular to the face (2a) to form the flange. The wooden section resists buckling and warping as well as lateral bending. It also acts as a cover between panels and allows easy fixing of panels using nails or glue. The metal section ensures flexural strength. It is possible for the metal web section to be any desired height. Sufficient wood should be maintained below the metal to prevent cracking. The metal section (1) can be fixed into the groove (3) by an appropriate means, preferably a glue which adheres to both wood and metal. Bolts can be used at intervals, to act as additional security. To assemble the beams, metal shoes or hangers can be used.
