Abstract

The beam consists of a metal web (1) counter-sunk edgewise into a piece of wood (2) perpendicular to the face (2a) to form the flange. The wooden section resists buckling and warping as well as lateral bending. It also acts as a cover between panels and allows easy fixing of panels using nails or glue. The metal section (1) can be fixed into the groove (3) by an appropriate means, preferably a glue which adheres to both wood and metal. Bolts can be used at intervals, to act as additional security.
