Abstract

The hollow structural or framework member of e.g. steel is made from flat sheet and can be of square cross section. It has a groove along each side which is V-shaped, the legs of the V sloping outwards, and two free edges of the sheet are interconnected to close the square. The grooves are formed in the flat sheet, the the square is formed by bending, and edges are joined at the centre of one of the four grooves. The joint may be made by overlapping, the secured by adhesive, screws or rivets or by clinching the two edges together. The grooves strengthen the member, and are also useful for locating connecting brackets, straps, adaptors etc, giving a much more rigid butt joint, angle joint, telescopic joint etc.
