Abstract

1444346 Honeycomb laminates DUFAYLITE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 27 Nov 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40395/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division E1] In an expanded structural honeycomb material of which the walls of the cells are coated with, or of which the cells contain an intumescent material for filling the cells when exposed to fire, the cells have walls formed to permit gaseous flow from cell to cell. In a preferred embodiment, the walls are so formed by notching the honeycomb material in the unexpanded state on at least one face thereof. The structural honeycomb material may be laminated between two adhesively secured facing panels. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, a building panel comprises frame members 1, 2, 3 and 4 and optionally cross-members 5 and 6, the members 1 to 6 being formed of flax boards, the shives of which are bonded with a urea-formaldehyde resin, the honeycomb member 7 being formed of thick paper coated with an intumescent ureaformaldehyde paint containing nitrocellulose, a blowing agent and inert fillers, the member 7 being faced with facing panels 8 and 9. Frame members 2 and 4 at least are formed with a deep central recess 10 and with rebates 11 and 12 which co-operate with the facing panels 8 and 9 to define further recesses on either side of recess 10. In Fig. 2, a pair of the panels is shown in butt-jointed relationship with the joint bridged internally by strips 13, 14, 15, e.g. of asbestos or hardboard dimensioned to mate within the recesses. In Fig. 3, the honeycomb material terminates at 16, short of the edges of the facing panels and the joint is bridged by a strip of intumescent coated honeycomb material 17 laminated between strips 18 and 19, e.g. of asbestos or hardboard.
