Abstract
A heat pump for domestic heating has a condenser giving up heat to room air or to a hot water circuit. The heat pump evaporator absorbs heat from exhaust air being extracted fromt he habitable area and being discharged to atmosphere. The temperature to which this air can be cooled is limited by the need to avoid frost formation on the evaporator. A direct fired gas heater is inserted in the exhaust air stream upstream of the evaporator so that the exhaust air can be pre-heated before reaching the evaporator. This heater is used in extreme cold weather to increase the output of the heat pump without reduction of the final discharge temperature. It can be controlled manually or automatically.
