Abstract
1497042 Thermal storage heaters; cooling buildings; air conditioning units NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 March 1975 [22 Dec 1973] 59669/73 Addition to 1396293 Headings F4U F4H and F4V A thermal storage apparatus substantially as described in Specification 1,396,293 for heating or cooling air and which may be used for ventilating or dehumidifying a room utilizes the evaporator 3, Fig. 1, of a compression refrigeration system 3, 5, 6, 7 to cool a freezable liquid, e.g. water or a crystallizable salt hydrate contained in at least one container 8b in a first thermal storage vessel 1 by utilizing the evaporator 3 of the refrigeration system and the heat exchanger 6 of the system to heat a crystallizable salt hydrate in at least one container 8a in a further storage vessel 14, ambient air being drawn through the cold or hot storage vessels 1, 14 respectively. The air passes through an entrance 9 or 16 to an exit 10 or 17 of the vessels 1 and 14 by a fan 13 or 15 as required. Many examples of salt hydrates are described together with crystallization promotion agents, e.g. water glass and the water may have a polyhydric alcohol added thereto. The storage vessels may be cylindrical or rectangular in cross-section and formed separately or integrally with one another to share a common dividing wall. By suitable adjustment the position of dampers 25, 26, Fig. 5, ambient air passing through a common inlet 29 and a filter 30 can pass into either of the vessels for heating or cooling, or by passing sequentially therethrough will be dehumidified before exhaustion by an additional fan 32 through a common outlet 31. An additional heater 35 which may be gas fired may be mounted in the exhaust 34 and the outlet 31 has a damper 33 directing air to a room or into a conduit 36 to the exterior of the building.
