Abstract

1395194 Heat pumps; space heaters or coolers MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 5 Sept 1972 [6 Sept 1971 8 Sept 1971 20 Sept 1971] 41113/72 Headings F4H and F4V A heat pump system air conditioner comprises a refrigerant compressor C, a refrigerant flow reversal valve 11, a gas tube 12, an indoor heat exchanger or coil 13, a combined check valve and expansion valve 25 an outdoor heat exchanger 15 and a suction gas tube 14 connected in the order named, and further comprising means for feeding a portion of the refrigerant liquid leaving the indoor heat exchanger 13 back to its inlet via a heater 33 to increase the heating effect of the heat exchanger at start-up or when the outside temperature is low. The liquid is led from a receiver 23 by a pump 32 to the heater which comprises an exchanger having a heat exchange coil (not shown) surrounded by a heat accumulating medium, e.g. water, and is conducted by by-pass tubes 35, 37 and a valve 36 to the tube 12. During the cooling cycle flow through the by-pass and heater 33 is prevented by closure of the valve 36 and flow of refrigerant through the system is reversed, reversal of flow also achieves hot gas defrosting of the outdoor heat exchanger coil 15 when operating as a condenser coil, the condensed refrigerant from the coil 15 passing through the valve 25 into the receiver 23 for passage through the heat exchanger 33 for evaporation by the heat from the heat accumulating medium, and then through tubes 35, 37, valve 37, tube 12 and the reversal valve 11 to an accumulator (not shown) and suction gas tube 28 into the compressor C. An ejector means may be provided in the gas tube for ejecting the refrigerant liquid flowing from the receiver into the refrigerant gas flowing from the compressor to the indoor coil and the heating means in the heat exchanger 33 may be electrical or formed as a burner. The tapped-off portion of refrigerant leaving the indoor heat exchanger may be mixed with the refrigerent stream passing to the indoor heat exchanger and the mixture passed through the heat exchanger 33. Air to be heated or cooled is circulated over the indoor and outdoor heat exchangers by fans, and in a further embodiment the indoor heat exchanger comprises two coils, one acting as an evaporator and the other as a condenser to achieve dehumidification of the air flowing thereover.
