Abstract

1,152,439. Air conditioning apparatus; heating and cooling systems. LITHONIA LIGHTING Inc. 22 April, 1966, No. 17794/66. Headings F4H, F4U and F4V. Air conditioning apparatus which will both cool and dehumidify air, comprises a blower 10 directing air through chemical dehumidifiers 11 and 15, heat exchangers 18 and 19, an adiabatic washer 20 and a duct 25 where it mixes with recirculated air to a closed space 24, a heat engine 65 for driving refrigerating apparatus which supplies the coolant for heat exchanger 19, and an evaporative cooler 44 for the water circulating through a panel 43 and a thermal louvre 46 which intercepts heat from a light source and from the sun respectively. Liquid desiccant for the first dehumidifier 11, which may be ethylene glycol or lithium chloride solution is regenerated in a boiler 35 heated by the exhaust heat from the engine, and then sprayed on a contactor surface 12 cooled by water from a cooling tower 13, the cooling tower water also being used to cool condenser 60. Solid desiccant in the second dehumidifier is regenerated by passing air from the space 24 which has been heated in heat exchangers 29 and 28 by the engine exhaust and exhaust from the dehumidifier respectively. The supply of cooling fluid to heat exchanger 19 and the supply of water to the washer 20 are controlled in response to a temperature sensing device 41. All the cooling of the space may be effected by a thermo-electric heat pump connected to the panel 43. The temperature of the space may also be controlled by a panel 73 supplied with chilled water from the evaporator 61. Under winter conditions exhaust heat from the engine may be used to heat incoming air which can then be humidified in dehumidifier 11. The exhaust heat from the internal combustion engine may be used to heat a water storage facility which can be used to heat the incoming air at night time.
