Abstract
A heat exchanger consists of two concentric cylinders with spiral fins extending from the outer surface of the inner cylinder to the inner surface of the outer cylinder forming a number of spiral passages through which the cooling medium (normally deionised water) flows. The flow of water is highly turbulent and scours the steam bubbles formed by boiling on the surface of the inner cylinder, carrying them out of the heat exchanger to a separate cooler. The cooling medium enters the heat exchanger at not less than 5 degrees C below the b.pt. and at least one per cent by volume of the flow is in the form of vapour at the outlet.
