Abstract

1,265,188. Heat and mass transfer apparatus. SEVERODONETSKY ORDENA LENINA KHIMICHESKY KOMBINAT. 14 Nov., 1969, No. 55777/69. Heading B1B. A heat and mass transfer process, such as evaporation wherein downflowing liquid and rising gas are contacted in a series of foam layers, is carried out in an apparatus comprising a shell 1 in which a plurality of conically-coiled tubes 3 are mounted one above another, each coil 3 having apertures for the upward flow of gas and being provided with a central tubular member 5 which projects downwardly into a liquid overflow vessel 6 thereby forming a liquid-seal for downflowing liquid which is to be distributed onto the coil 3 below. The liquid to be treated is introduced into the apparatus through inlet 10; and the gas is supplied through inlet 12. The rising gas stream is set in whirling motion by fins 7 under each coil 3. A turbulent foamlayer is produced on each coil 3. The treated liquid is discharged through outlet 15; and the gas is discharged through separator 9. Shell 1 is surrounded by a jacket 2. Additional coiled tubes 8 are disposed between the coils 3. The jacket 2 and coils 3 and 8 may be supplied with steam or with, cooling medium. The production of concentrated ammonium nitrate is referred to.
