Abstract

1,212,088. Surface condensers. GEA LUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H & CO. K.G. 15 March, 1968 [4 April, 1967], No. 12709/68. Heading F4S. A discontinuously operating sublimation condenser for the recovery by desublimation of a reaction product such as phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride or naphthalene from a gasvapour mixture comprises a cylindrical vessel 1 having a gas-vapour inlet 6 and an outlet 6a for uncondensed gas and housing a rectangular assembly 16 of spaced horizontal finned tubes 17 interconnected at their ends by return bends 18. Cooling liquid enters the tube 17 via inlet headers 21 and leaves via outlet headers 21a. Alternatively, one inlet and one outlet header (25, Fig. 6, not shown) may be used. The product, which condenses on the tubes 17 in the solid state, is removed periodically by passing a heating liquid through the tubes, thus melting the product which is then drained off through an outlet 11. Vertical partitions 19 bounding the tube assembly 16 together with the end walls 3, 4 and shell 2 of the vessel 1 are provided with heating tubes 20 which are connected to headers (20a, Fig. 3) and supplied with a heating medium as required during condensing and/or melting of the product. Inlet 6 and outlets 6a, 11 are also provided with independent heating means. Several condensers are normally arranged to be operated in phase-displaced cycles to obtain a constant product output.
